The Sumaco Biosphere Reserve in Ecuador is one of the most unique forests in the world. Although it takes a long time to get in it and despite the dangerous conditions for living, some scientists spent months living in it. Their findings are really unbelievable and impressive, making this forest one in a kind.
Searching for a place with better sunlight and more solid ground, the trees in this forest almost literally walk! Due to the eroding of the soil, these walking trees are forced to grow new roots and to relocate their trunks, up to 20 meters.
Controversially, according to the new laws and reforms, the locals are supported to cut down the trees, to gain ownership of that land and after five years to sell it. The price for one hectare is around $500, but some conservationists buy big parts of the land, with hope to protect it and save it from deforestation and losing its uniqueness. “Trees can’t walk enough to escape the chainsaw”, scientists said.
The forest from one side, containing all the living world in it, together with the raging volcanoes on the other side, make this area a true divine inside an ocean full of life. Some of the locals who have lived in their new lands, talk about the bad spirit in the deep parts of the forest and its dangerousness due to the different insects and other potential threats.
During their adventure in the heart of the Reserve, the scientists discovered beautiful waterfalls and new vertebrate species. They found more than 150 cockroach species in different colours, in order to camouflage for protection. Although attacked by monkeys and sometimes losing up to 10 kg of weight in a week because of the hard conditions, these people said it was totally worth it!
