Located just outside the border of Whitehorse in the mountains of Canada, Takhini Hot Pools are the most visited location in the Yukon. The hot springs host one of the most bizarre by extremely fun annual tradition called “The Hair Freezing Contest”.
Every February the management of Takhini Hot Pools invites brave bathers to try style their hair by wetting it first and then letting it freeze naturally. Contestants are then asked to photograph themselves with frozen hair for a chance to receive a cash prize. The hot springs water manages to remain at tropical 36-42 degrees Celsius (around 96-107 Fahrenheit), even when the weather outside is -30 C (-22 F).
The lucky winner gets a $150 cash prize while all contestants receive a complimentary pool pass for participating.
