This Saturday, the world biggest beer festival Oktoberfest opened in Munich for the 180th time. The largest traditional German breweries invite you for 16 days of Bavarian beer, food and folk music.
It all began in the early 1810 with the wedding of the Bavarian prince Ludwig to Princess Therese. Couple of days later a celebration was organized for the public and repeated for years to come. Today, it attracts millions of people and has become an important part of Bavarian culture. It is also known as the largest People Fair in the World with more than 6-7 million visitors each year.
The Festival is held in a area near Munich`s center known as Theresienwiese often called Wiesn for short. All the visitors can enjoy is some of Europe’s finest beer and variety of deliciously prepared national food like the Hendl (chicken), the famous Weisswurst (white sausage,) some roast pork with potato and a spiced cheese-butter spread. The festival will also give you a taste of their culture like the traditional costumes, brass bands as well as some horse-drawn carriages.
There is still time to let go, join the crowd and do some dancing and singing of your own.
