Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
This ancient city in Sri Lanka – Sigiriya or Lion`s Rock is a fortress made of rock, surrounded with beautiful gardens. Sigiriya today is recognized as one of UNESCO World Heritage sites and a major tourist attraction. The fortress was built in the 5th century AD by order of King Hassapa I, displaying the creativity and craftsmanship of its people. However, other experts believe that the city was built as a Monastery by Buddhist monks, long before the ruling of King Kassapa.
