There are villages and towns that have succeeded in maintenance of their original architecture and landscapes although they were largely influenced by modernization.
The following 14 settlements have preserved their original architecture, their tradition and their original culture.
1. Český Krumlov, Czech Republic
Český Krumlov is one of the best preserved medieval villages in the Czech Republic rich in cobbled roads and authentic medieval castles. The Eggenberg Brewery still exists in the village, still using the area’s high-quality water in a traditional way dating from around the 1560s.
2. Shirakawa-go Village and Gokayama Village, Japan
The two mountainous villages – Shirakawa-go village situated in the Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama village in Nanto in Toyama Prefecture in Japan- have preserved their unique building style of thatched steeply pitched roofs.
