9. Shirakawa-go, Japan
Even though there are not many of the original traditional houses left, Shirakawa-go was still declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mostly for its building style known as gasshō-zukuri. It’s one of the most scenic places you see in Japan, surrounded by pine tree covered mountains.
For the best view of the village as well as the nearby Shogawa River Valley head out to the top of Ogimachi Castle.
