In case you didn`t know the European Parliament plans to end visa-free travel for all America planning to visit the old continent. This decision came after the USA didn`t agree to grant visa-free travel to European citizens from Croatia, Cyprus, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. By excluding these five countries the US didn`t meet its obligation to give all EU countries a visa-free travel.
If by the end of April, the US fails to grant visa-free travel to the citizens of these countries, the European Commission will suspend the visa waiver for US citizens for 1 year.
Other countries like Canada, Japan, Brunei and Australia were also found violating their agreements, but now all EU citizens can visit their countries without visa. In April 12, 2014 the US were given 2 years to correct this issue and last December the European Parliament threatened to do the same and suspend all visa-free travel for US citizens who want to visit Europe.
Here is the official press release by the European Parliament:
“The EU Commission is legally obliged to take measures temporarily reintroducing visa requirements for US citizens, given that Washington still does not grant visa-free access to nationals of five EU countries.”
“Making it more difficult for US citizens to travel to Europe would certainly deprive the European travel and tourism sector of essential revenue, and put thousands of European jobs at stake in one of the few sectors which experienced a strong growth in employment.”
Donald Trump`s administration has already been contacted and asked to resolve this issue.
